An Adventurers Is Us!

Well, as you can see by this post, I've finally fixed the blog. The untimely demise of Dinky Bomb has left us pretty much in the dulldrums for the past few months... but that might be about to change!

If you haven't already, go check out Kingdom of Loathing. It's the wittiest game I have ever played, featuring lush, two-color stick figure graphics. Seriously, this game is very fitting with our clan's sense of humor. Based on the enthusiastic reactions I've been getting, this might be our long-awaited replacement for DB! After you hit level 3, search out and apply for the Luzers 4 Eva!

At any rate, it's inspired me to fix up the forum a bit and get the blog working again. Before you all can post on it, I have to convert your accounts from Blogger to Google accounts... which will take a while... but once Toast is back from camp, hopefully we can knock it out. So that "New Post" button should be back soon! And the peasants rejoice!

How I Got Injured

Changes for WPH

This week Gregg will be moving the WPH forums over to the Atari website. From what I understand, most of the WPH forums as we know them will stay in tact as a sub-area of the Atari forums, but there may be a few changes.

Some people are afraid of this because they don't want to lose the close-knit-ness of the community, and I can understand that. I'm afraid of that too, but several of the WPH mods have been exploring things at Atari, and from what I hear their community is pretty similar to ours... so I think we will fit together nicely. The plus side is that WPH'ers will now be exposed to the games at Atari play and vice-versa, so now there are more games to explore and potentially more cool new people to meet in the lobbies. So I think that, overall, this will be a good thing for us.

If things do get more crowded in the DB lobbies, being a member of a clan will be more important than ever. With a lot of new people coming in, the ratio of skill to score will go down, meaning that, in effect, we all become "better" players without actually improving our abilities. The molotov shots you know now will be less known by the general public, so if you were just a low blue before, you might be a red now. Also, with lots more people around, it is nice to have a community like a clan. It's always easier to cope when there's people around that you know.

L4E: Clan of the Year for 2006

But serisouly, I am very pleased to see this poll work out so well, and greatful to everyone who voted for us. It's been 3 years now, and L4E is still going strong. We're still one of the most active clans in the lobby, and still a clan that lots of people are trying to get into. I'm amazed at how well we have done, and I hope we continue to do even better in the next few years. It's all because of our amazing members. Without you guys, there would be no L4E, so thank you so much for making us the clan of the year 2006!

Exactly three years ago today (yesterday , technically... but it's still night time)... DK and I got drunk on cheap champaign, made a few bad decisions, and well one thing led to another... and 9 months later (actually that very night) L4E was born!

Today, Wednesday December 20th 2006, is the three year anniversary of the Luzers 4 Eva It has been my distinct pleasure to be a part of this clan, truly the greatest clan ever to rock the Dinky Bomb lobbies. We've had a lot of laughs these past three years, and some drama too, but it's all in fun. I want to say a special thanks to everyone who has been a part of L4E. I really do consider you all to be my friends. Here's to three more years of rockin' it L4E style!

I want to play with my Wii!

My friend who works at a video game store bought a Wii yesterday, right after it came out. It came with Wii sports and he bought Zelda: Twilight Princess.

My evaluation: very cool. I'll admit that it wasn't totally 100% as cool as I had hoped, but that's because I had really high expectations. The remote really does follow your movements well, and it can tell how you are holding it. Wii sports comes with Tennis, Bowling, Boxing, Golf, etc... and you control your character akmost entirely by moving the remote(s). For the example, in the boxing game you hold a controller in one hand and the extension in the other hand, and it detects with hand you are hitting with and what kind of punch you are throwing. In the tennis game it swings the raquete when you swing the remote. My favorite part is that the controller vibrates and makes noise according to what you are doing. If you are playing tennis, the remove vibrates when you hit the ball and makes a 'boing' noise... feels very similar to holding a real raquete. All in all, very intuitive, and I am impressed.

Twilight Princess looks fun too. There were about 5 of us all switching off, so I didn't get that much play time, but this weekend I will get plenty more. The graphics are pretty, and the game still seems nice and simple (just the way I like Zelda).From what little I saw of the Twilight Princess (the character) this game could get really trippy and weird. We shall see.

My assessment so far: Wii rocks. I might just be getting one this Christmas, thus breaking my long-honored tradition of never buying a system until it is 10 years old.

Back to School... Ugh!

Well, it's that time of year again. I think I speak for most of us when I say "ugh!"

I'm driving back to New Orleans on Thursday and moving in that weekend. After that I've got all the general back-to-school business going on, so I may or may not be around much for this next week. I'm sure most everyone else is in the same boat. Around this time, things on WPH get pretty slow for about a month or two. It happens every year. So, if you notice the lobby being pretty empty and not a lot of things going on, just give it some time. Things usually pick back up to full speed around late September.

Personally, I will be enjoying my last two days of summer vacation. Not sure how yet, since there is nothing to do in this town... but believe me, I will find a way! Huzzah!

Snakes on a Motherfuckin Plane!!!

Simply amazing. Stupendous. Best movie I've seen this year after Pirates II.

Seriously folks, you have to see it. I can't put it into words. Believe it or not, the writing was really good. The acting was good. The passenger characters were good. The action was alright. There were a suprizing number of "woah, that scared the crap out of me" moments, and some REALLY painful death scenes.

The following quotes will be forver imoratlized in movie history:

"I've had it with these motherfuckin snakes on this motherfuckin plane! Everybody strap yourselves in... I'm going to open some windows!"

"Oh great... snakes on crack."

"We've got to put a barier between us, and the snakes!"

"Do as I say, and you live."

My main criticism is that the introduction to the movie was too peaceful. I wanted explosions and hard rock when the title appeared. But oh well, can't have everything. This movie rocks face, plain and simple. I'm pre-ordering my copy of the DVD.

Machine Mode

It's that time of year again. The planets have aligned and brought about that dreadful interim which I feel cannot be described by any other words besides "hell." I am talking, of course, about exam week.

Unlike last semester, when I had only 1 exam due to all my professors being fired, I have exams in all my classes--all four of my upper-level Computer Science classes. Before Friday ends, I will have taken 4 exams, turned in 3 major projects, and programmed 5 labs in 3 different programming languages. You know that horrible moment when, after putting everything off until the last possible minute, you realize that you have finally reached the last possible minute? That happened about 3 days ago... meaning that my minute will be over a week long. But not to worry, though some marvel of college student evolution, I have developed an adaptation to cope with just such a minute.

I call it "machine mode." It is the state I enter at the end of every semester when the work piles up so high that low flying aircraft have to be redirected. It happens like this: I pause for a moment to consider my calendar. I come to the realization that I have several large projects due in a few days and several exams to study for and take in the process. I evaluate the situation and decided if I can afford even one more hour of procrastination. If the answer is "no" I shift into machine mode, a truly sub-human means of existence by which I can achieve super-human feats. In machine mode, I have been known to write entire research papers in a single sitting--usually an 8 hour + endeavor--without so much as blinking. Like a rat in some sort of post-apocalyptic wasteland, my body manages to subsist on the occasional yield of the poorly-stocked vending machines around campus, and I begin to focus so intensely that the common man might mistake me for a victim of an Aderol overdose. My skin begins to turn a sort of light olive color, and I slowly begin to take on the traits of a subterranean bat-creature.

By the end of the process, I am left physically and mentally drained and stop responding to all outside stimuli for about 48 hours. My trusted friends attach me to a feeding tube and wait patiently for me to come-to, at which point I am back to normal. That's how it goes. A bit extreme you say? Yes, it is. Worth an entire semester of slacking off? Hell yes. So, in summary, if I don't post for the next few days, know that I am curled up in the fetal position and tucked away in some dark corner of Loyola, churning out programs at an incredible rate. I'll be back to normal next week.

Pirates 2: Best Movie I've Seen All Year

It was amazing. If you didn't see it tonight, see it today. 5 stars. I am buying this the day it comes out on DVD.

Some people will disagree with me. Was it cheesy? Yes. Did it recycle every funny moment from the old one? Yes. But they did it so well! This movie was everything I wanted it to be, and nothing more. If you love fine Shakespearean acting and cinimatography, do not see this movie. If you love pirates and want to laugh your arse off, see this movie ASAP.

Once agian, the plot was awesome. Lots of plot turns. There were a ton of references to the original movie, some of them very subtle... I'm tempted to talk about them but I don't want to spoil anything. All I can say is that it had the same kind of great "Jack Sparrow" moments that we all loved in the first one, and it also had some great Elizabeth moments too. Even Orlando Bloom was good. He is not my favorite actor, but he was good in this role and in this movie. His character was a little tougher, which I was glad to see. All the other roles he has played have been the same "Legolas" type character, so this one was a relief.

They blatantly set it up for a triqual, and I am thrilled. If they keep this up, this trilogy will go right next to The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars on my shelf. There's a brief little scene at the end, so stay for the credits.

One thing I love--and you'll know what I'm talking about after you see it--is the fact that all the original characters (aka all the ones from the original movie which make appearances in this one... which is all of them I think) have switched sides at least once. Everyone has been on the "good" side or the "bad" side at least once... except for Jack... who is sort of a side all to himself. Also, they resolved the hole in the plot of the original movie. And by resolved, I don't mean that they made up something silly (the Star Wars method of covering up plot holes). They used it to bring in another very important character.

All I can say is see it. It was amazing. I am in love.

In other news, I'm going to the beach again tomorow, so I'll be out of touch for a couple days. Also, I got pulled over for the first time in my life, and my brakes went out. It's been an eventful night!

I know many people in my graduated class that were in the top 25 that, yes, are genius's in math and science and that jazz, but when taken out of school they have no common sense. I look a my 3 Uncles, none went to college, but today they can fix anything and together could build u a house, they can build and fix and have knowlegde about everything, hence why im working with my uncle. Grades dont mean shit depending on what u want to do with ur life, i want to be a carpenter, so technically most high school classes were pointless. Valedictorians r the smartest in ur class for high school classes, putt hem in some other field and they could look like they r from Britain. Mwahahaha i had to toss that in there.

Here I am going to lay out what the slightly off average lazy/bored high schooler(me) thinks about his classes:

History - Too damn much boring reading about stuff I really couldn't care less about
English - The reading is bearable, but you have to remember everything that happens in the book
Science - What? I don't get to pick which science I take til I'm a junior!?!?!? >.<
Math - ugh, I have to memorize all these formulas and remember them for the next 6 months -_-
(extra) language - I actually find learning this language useful and I can't really find anything to critique in how i've learned it so far...other than that one crazy teacher who made us sing :-D

Basically, I believe grades are a very inaccurate scale of the person's knowledge...sure, they may know the exact date montana was annexed into the US, but can they analyze history and economics to predict what will happen to the US economy over the next 50 years?

I have to say that most valedictorians are not the smartest persons in their class. They just happen to be pretty smart and they work very hard to receive that honor. I personally can't get enough motivation to even get straight A's--too much work for too little reward.

Now that its summer, I honestly want to get all A+'s next school year(because I'm bored and need something to do). I know I could if I really tried, but I doubt I will...It'll start boring me, and then I'll just want to sit around and play online games instead.

I want to get a job building computers or troubleshooting computer problems, as it is something I find fun. I want to learn more about computers. But what can I learn about the history and development of computers at school? Nothing. But I can learn how to use dreamweaver to design webpages. This is how most schools teach web design- they just make the kid use dreamweaver. In order to best use a programming language, it is best to actually learn the code-that way you learn all of the capabilities of that language, and know what you can and cannot do. And if you find something you can't do, but would like to, you can simply find another way to do it! All they do is teach you how to use the program, not how to use the code - the essence of the page!

uhhh...i dunno what else to rant on about! :-D

Kings Mother: Much better than I expected!

I had low expectations for this particular game. I loved the graphics and nudity. The way u start out is pretty sweet, u choose the scenario, i chose Milf. The plot was iffy, i mean all u do is bang, its cool but kinda got lame after she began repeated her moves. The ending was aight.

In the end, the game was so worth the 2 Dollas.

Superman: Much Better than I Expected

I saw Superman Returns last night, and I give it 4 stars.

I'm not even a fan of Superman, but some friends were going to see it last night, so I tagged along. It was everything a comic book movie should be, and nothing more. There was just enough drama to make things interesting, but not too much. The acting was good, or at least good enough that it didn't distract from the movie. The action was slightly lacking... though there are some nice scenes, particularly Superman vs. a gatlin gun (the gun wins... JK!). The movie did a good job with its humor too. Most comic book movies have pretty cheesy jokes, but there were several "lol" moments in this one, and they were executed well. It did a good job of paying tribute to the original movie. The special effects were good.

Also, I really like the arch-villian: Lex Luthor. Superman is invincible to everything but Kryptonite, and Lex is just a normal ol' human. So the fact that he still gives Superman a run for his money is pretty cool. He is your traditional "cultured" villian, with his classical music and expencive tastes, though he has a goofball side side too, which is a nice deviation from normal "classy villains."

One of my friends complained that there is not epic battle scene at the end. It's basically Superman vs. a continent. I agree that a big fist fight would have been more satisfying, but I don't hold it against them for leaving it out, since Lex is just a normal guy.

New Server - Expect Downtime / Weird Stuff

I'm buying a new server for myself (and thus, for L4E). Theoretically, there shouldn't be any problems transferring everything from the current server to the new one... but you never know. The transfer will probably happen today (Friday, June 23), so if the website and/or forums are acting strange or not working, don't worry. After Friday, if anything is acting wierd, let me know.

For those of you who know web jargon, feast your eyes:
- 2.5 gigs of webspace
- 50 gigs of traffic
- Dedicated IP
- Cron Jobs / PHP / CGI / Perl / Python / Flash / Shockwave / SSI
- Unlimited MySQL databases

... and my personal favorite feature...

- VIRTUAL PRIVATE SERVER

Yeah, that means it's just basically a computer I can access remotely. That means I can run programs on the server. That's right. I could execute .exe files ON MY FRIGGIN WEB SERVER. And I'm getting this all for a crazy low price. Trust me, this is rocking. It's rocking face.
